The Golden Gate

Scott Walker October 13, 2018

The Golden Gate Bridge is a massive suspension structure. The bridge in San Francisco spans one point seven miles across what is called "The Golden Straight."

The icon bridge first saw construction in 1933 and was opened in 1937.

“I left my heart in San Francisco. High on a hill, it calls to me. To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars. The morning fog may chill the air, I don’t care.”
— Tony Bennett, 1962

Today, 110,000 vehicles pass over it daily. A toll of up to $8 is charged to each vehicle heading down the 6 lane pass.

The Frommer's travel guide reports it is the most photographed bridge in the world.

The bridge was dedicated as a California landmark in 1987 and a San Francisco landmark in 1999.
